Colour wheels

Colour contrasts are just as important as colour similarities, and often when I create a colour-based flat lay, what really lifts it is a contrasting colour, simply because it highlights the rest of the colour scheme. Making your own colour wheel can familiarize your brain with the colour spectrum and it also means that you will have a colour reference easily to hand. You can also play around with making a colour wheel by using different objects.

Colour collecting

Collecting colour through observation is another simple way to lead you into a daily practice of actually looking at what’s around you and loosens up your ‘noticing’ skills. By introducing an activity, that of collecting, you bring a simple sense of purpose to the act of looking, which in turn means that you don’t just look, you actively ‘see’ things.

There is always ample opportunity for colour collecting. Whether you’re out on a walk or just doing chores at home, you will be surrounded by colours that most people don’t even notice. Once you start ‘collecting’ them, this can become informative and incredibly satisfying. One of the best ways to notice and acknowledge colour around you is to start to familiarize yourself with it in an everyday way. Colour collecting is something that a camera phone is really useful for, because when a colour jumps out at you, perhaps when you’re least expecting it, you have an instant way to ‘capture’ it.
